В роде стангопея (Stanhopea) автор данной статьи насчитал 63 вида, широко распространенных в тропиках Америки – от Мексики до Бразилии и Перу.
Этимология Свое название род получил в честь президента Лондонского медицинско-ботанического общества Ф. Стангоупа. Из-за двух выростов на губе цветка, напоминающих бычьи рога, стангопея получила второе название – «орхидея-бык».
Биологическое описание 
Для всего этого рода характерны небольшие яйцевидные ребристые бульбы, несущие на коротком черешке один слегка волнистой продолговато-эллиптической формы, длиной до 35 см (в зависимости от вида) лист, с ясно видимыми продольными жилками.
Цветоносы формируются в основании псевдобульб и растут наклонно вниз или вбок, поэтому стангопеи выращивают в подвесных корзинках, в рыхлом субстрате на основе мха сфагнума. Единственный их недостаток – непродолжительное цветение, что, впрочем, компенсируется оригинальностью цветков и их приятным, сильным ароматом, свойственным наиболее популярным в культуре видам.
Соцветие несет от 2 до 6 (в зависимости от вида) ярких, крупных цветков, размер которых у некоторых видов доходит до 18 см в диаметре. Чашелистики и лепестки у них отогнуты вверх, а колонка и мясистая, хрящеватая губа, направлены вниз, на средней части губы - роговидные выросты (как было сказано выше)
