Cross: (micranthum x delenatii) Intro:
Magic Lantern is a cross between micranthum and delenatii, two wonderful pink species which produce very large flowers and can be fragrant. Paph. micranthum is a recent discovery made in the 1980's in China, and Paph. delenatii was discovered in Vietnam in the early 1900's. Most of the populations today of Paph. delenatii have been raised from one single parent plant. This cross yields very large flowers with wonderful coloring and excellent shape.
Light:
These plants can be grown in light ranging from phalaenopsis to cattleya. Brighter light in the spring will result in longer darker flowers.
Temperature:
They will tolerate warm temperatures during the summer months but require somewhat cooler temperatures during the winter months to initiate flowering. Temperatures of 62 and colder are necessary to produce good flower production. Paphiopedilum micranthum in nature has been known to get frost on the leaves. Micranthum is resistent to frost because of the scaley protrusions on the upper surface of their leaves.
Humidity:
40-70% is ideal.
Water:
These plants will tolerate and require more minerals that alot of paphs., and seem to thrive in water that is somewhat higher in calcium and magnesium. Municipal waters originating from reservoirs, and some well waters, should be excellent for these plants. They should not be kept too wet, allowing them to just approach dryness between waterings. For best results watering should be done in the morning so the leaves are dry by nightfall.
Fertilizer:
With municipal water, use GrowMore Urea-Free 20-10-20. For rainwater, distilled, or reverse osmosis water, use CalMag 15-5-15. Water thoroughly to flush out any mineral deposits, then fertilize afterwards. Many growers follow this practice. If you don't wish to flush each watering, then fertilize every third watering.
We also highly recommend Green Jungle Orchid Food, especially formulated to work with rain, distilled, reverse osmosis water or water low in alkalinity. Fertilize with Green Jungle every time you water.
Flowering:
Flowering season is generally in the spring months, as both parents tend to bloom at that time. Flowers developing under somewhat cooler conditions will be larger and more colorful than those bloomed under warmer conditions. Flowers are quite large in size and are sensational when in bloom.
Repotting:
Repot in the spring after flowering or in the fall using a medium grade bark mix.
